Dipesh Dhami of Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Club completed a haul of triple title in the Krishna Mohan Memorial Open Badminton Championships on Friday.
Having won the mixed doubles title with Pooja Shrestha late on Thursday, Dhami clinched two more titles—men’s singles and men’s doubles-on Friday. Dhami survived a second set debacle to beat Prince Dahal of Silk Group 221-12, 18-21, 21-14 in the men’s singles final.
Dhami also teamed up with Bijeet Thapa Magar to claim the men’s double championship with a 21-16, 21-4 mauling of Praful Maharjan and Suroj Maharjan of Tribhuvan Army Club in the final. On Thursday, Dhami and Pooja beat APF clubmates Thapa Magar and Shova Gauchan 21-10, 21-12.
Defeat in the men’s singles meant Dahal had to contend himself with just a single title, the U-17 boys’ singles. Dahal had defeated Pemba Sherpa of APF in the U-17 boys’ singles title clash on Thursday. Dhami made to most the absence of defending champion Ratnajit Tamang of the Army club, who is currently undergoing training in Japan.
Army shuttler Rashila Maharjan clinched the women’s singles title with a battling 21-14, 13-21, 21-18 victory over Jessica Gurung of APF in the final. It was Rashila’s second title of the meet having landing the U-17 girls singles title late on Thursday.
Rashila had defeated Sima Rajbanshi of Moran 21-14, 21 -15 in the U-17 final. Rashila also benefited largely in the absence of defending women’s singles champion Nangshal Devi Tamang, who skipped the tournament due to personal reasons.
Pooja Shrestha also completed a double after teaming up with Jessica to win the women’s doubles title. The APF pair eased past Army club shuttlers Anu Maya Rai and Rashila Maharjan 21-10, 21-19 in the final. Top three finishers in the men’s singles and doubles received Rs 60,000, Rs 30,000 and Rs 25,000, while the top three shuttlers in the women’s singles got Rs 50,000, Rs 25,000 and Rs 12,500. Top three pairs in women’s doubles earned Rs 40,000, Rs 25,000 and Rs 10,000. Reshma Bhandari of APF was declared the best player in the women’s category and received a scooter.
Meanwhile, Ivanhoe Lissanevitch won the men’s singles title in the 11th Sahabir Memorial Open Lawn Tennis Tournament with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Nick Rastrup in the final. Hosts APF clinched the sixth National Open Women’s Championship defeating New Diamond Academy 25-12, 25-11, 25-11 in the final.
