Singh sets three national records
Gaurika Singh set three national records on the opening day of the 20th National Open Swimming Championships on Sunday.Singh shattered national records in women’s 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke and 200 backstroke events. She won the 100m freestyle in 1:03.91 to break the previous record held by Sofia Shah. Shah’s previous mark was 1:05.78, set during the 19th National Swimming Championships last year.
Singh timed 1 minute 26.72 seconds to set new record in 100m breaststroke. Bibidha Rimal had long held the mark at 1:27.54 during the 2007 Pramod Memorial Swimming. She then broke the 200m backstroke national mark by bettering her own previous record she had set last year. She finished the course in 2:37.87. Her previous national record was 2:48.16. The 200 backstroke was held only as a time trial after less than four swimmers turned up.
Meanwhile, Neharika Tuladhar also set a new national record in the age-group category on Sunday. Tuladhar won the 50m breaststroke girls’ 15-17 age-group title in 39.78.
She broke Bibidha Rimal’s previous mark of 40.07 which she set during the first South Asian Swimming Federation Games in 2007.
