Gurung, Shah picked up for Asiad after dazzling swim
Sirish Gurung of Nepal Police Club (NPC) and Sofia Shah of Central Region closed out the 17th National Swimming Championships with three more gold medals eachNepal Swimming Association (NSA) had taken the tournament as selection for the Asian Games and two dominating figures in Nepali swimming got swift entries. While Gurung got hold of seven gold medals, Shah bagged six. NSA had announced it will pick four swimmers each in male and female category to train for the Asian Games. The other six will be selected on the basis of Fina points system on Tuesday, NSA announced.
Shah, who had bettered her won national records in the women’s 200m and 50m freestyle on the opening day, received a cash prize of Rs 10,000 for her achievements.
Tribhuwan Army Club (TAC) were crowned team champions after accumulating 67 points with NPC finishing second on 65. Central region ended up third with 43 points.
Gurung, who struck four gold medals on the first day, added three more on Monday. Gurung prevailed in the men’s 200m freestyle with the timing of 2:18.97, 100m butterfly in 1:09.09 and 200m backstroke in 2:41.0
Shah, meanwhile, triumphed in 200m individual medley completing the course in 3:01.34, 100m freestyle in 1:07.22 and 50m butterfly in 36.16.
Dilip Thapa Magar of TAC, who had one gold medal to his name on the first day, won 50m backstroke gold in 34.63 and 50m freestyle in 27.94 on the last day. Kiran Karki of TAC took pole position in 100m breaststroke after finishing the course in 1:21.91. It was Karki’s third gold medal.
TAC succeeded in men’s 4x100m open relay ahead of NPC and Central. Aditi Dhital got hold of the women’s 400m freestyle title. Olympian Shreya’s younger sister, Dhital, clocked 5:53.39 to claim her second gold.
Sonira Bista of TAC won the women’s 200m butterfly in 3:37.13. Oshina Bharati of NPC took 100m backstroke title in 1:31.69, while Niharika Tuladhar of Central came first in 50m breaststroke.
In all 123 swimmers vied for 27 gold medals on offer in the two-day event held under the first Lumbini National Championships.
