A stone Shivalinga has been found in Niglihawa village in ward 9 of Kapilvastu Municipality. It was found while excavated soil from an old pond was being dumped in a nearby field.
According to Shanti Sharma, chief of the Kapilvastu Museum, the Shivalinga is believed to date back to the medieval period, possibly the 16th or 17thcentury. The lower circular base of the relic measures 5 feet 6 inches in diameter, the middle part is 45 inches, and the upper cylindrical part is 16.5 inches tall.
The presence of the yoni (base) along with the Shivalinga suggests there may have once been a temple at the site. The artifact is currently being kept safely at a local resident’s home.
