Chinese officials have prioritised border security for the smooth operation of the Tatopani border point during a meeting between officials of Nepal and China held in physical presence after three years.
According to, Ramesh Neupane, the chief district officer of Sindhupalchok, the high-ranking officials of China asked for Nepal’s view on the issue, stressing Nepal should adopt stringent border security measures for the seamless operation of the trade point.
“China seems positive for the regular operation of the border crossing, but the Chinese authorities stressed that the officials from both countries need to discuss further ways to combat cross-border crimes,” said Neupane.
“They only asked for suggestions. We are at an early stage of discussions. China said it is constructing necessary infrastructures.”
The border point that was once popular, remained closed for four years following the 2015 earthquake and was again disturbed during the outbreak of Covid-19.
The border point came into partial operation to allow entry of 150 containers stranded on the Chinese side.
Daya Nidhi KC, head of Tatopani dry port and customs office, said revenue collection has slumped as hardly four containers have been entering Nepal daily.
