The curfew imposed in parts of Gaur Municipality after clashes between two groups on Saturday remains in effect, the district administration said on Sunday.
The unrest erupted in Sabgadh in ward 6, where members of two communities reportedly argued during a wedding procession, escalating into stone-pelting and the torching of a vehicle.
Despite a six-point agreement reached on Friday evening following earlier confrontations, tensions resurfaced around 9am on Saturday, prompting authorities to enforce a curfew from 1pm.
Chief District Officer Dinesh Sagar Bhusal said the curfew has been maintained until further notice to prevent the situation from deteriorating further. “The situation is stabilising. We will lift the curfew once conditions are safe,” he said.
The curfew zone covers the Gaur Customs Office, extending east to Mudbalwa Gate, west to the Lalkaiya embankment, and north to the Bam Canal area. Security personnel from the Nepali Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force have been mobilised to restore order. Authorities have urged residents to exercise restraint while movement in the area remains restricted, with limited exceptions for essential activities between 6:30am and 8:30am.
Dozens were taken into custody for allegedly instigating the clashes, highlighting ongoing community tensions in the district. The administration continues to monitor the situation closely to prevent further incidents, it said.
