The number of cholera cases in Parsa district has started to decrease, health officials said on Saturday.
Dr Uday Narayan Singh, spokesperson for Narayani Hospital, said only 28 new patients with diarrhoea and cholera were admitted in the past 24 hours, reflecting a gradual decline in cases.
“Data from the past three to four days show a slowing in the number of new patients. If this trend continues, the total number of cases could drop significantly within a week,” he said.
Singh said that wards 12 and 13 of Birgunj Metropolitan City, which initially saw the highest number of infections, have reported almost no new cholera or diarrhoea cases, of late.
According to the District Health Office, a total of 202 people have been infected with cholera in Birgunj and Pokhariya combined. Of these, 188 cases were reported from Birgunj hospitals and health centres, while 14 from Pokhariya.
So far, 186 patients have recovered and returned home, while 16 remain under treatment. Over the past two weeks, 1,054 patients with diarrhoea and cholera have sought treatment, of whom 949 have been discharged. Currently, 105 patients remain in hospitals, including 11 in the Intensive Care Unit, five in the High Dependency Unit, and 89 in general wards.
Narayani Hospital has treated the highest number of confirmed cholera cases at 62, followed by Terai Hospital with 51, National Medical College with 29, Birgunj Health Care Hospital with 11, and Bhawani Hospital with 10.
