Congress special general convention enters closed-door session today
Deliberations to focus on statute amendment, leadership and governance reforms.Post Report
The Nepali Congress’ second special general convention moves into its closed-door session on Monday at Bhrikutimandap, a day after the opening session concluded amid strong participation from party delegates.
According to convention publicity committee coordinator Subas Pokharel, the closed session will begin at 10am. The session will first finalise the convention’s working procedures, after which delegates will be divided into nine groups to deliberate on four key themes: statute amendment, policy and leadership, governance reform, and contemporary issues.
Pokharel said the closed session will also hold an extensive discussion on whether the party should pursue a leadership change. If delegates decide in favour of a change, an election committee will be formed to move the process forward. He added that the possibility of a unanimous new working committee remains high, which could eliminate the need for voting.
Delegate registration will continue until 11am today. Area and district coordination committee coordinator Yubaraj Pandey said most delegates from outside Kathmandu arrived only this morning and joined the registration process that began at 8am.
The special general convention, called by general secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, began on Sunday with what organisers described as enthusiastic participation. Leaders claim more than 56 percent of the party’s general convention delegates had verified their presence by Sunday evening, a number expected to rise further during the closed session.
The convention follows weeks of internal tension after Thapa and Sharma, backed by a majority of 14th general convention delegates, demanded organisational and leadership reforms in the wake of the September Gen Z movement. Despite resistance from the party establishment, the scale of participation has reduced fears of a party split, according to political analysts.
Thapa has said decisions taken by the closed session will be final, stressing that the general convention has the authority to amend party policy, statute and leadership. Sharma is scheduled to present the organisational report today, while Thapa will table the political report.
