Nepali Congress has called an emergency meeting of its Central Working Committee on Saturday amid deepening intra-party tension.
“Party’s office bearers, central working committee members, the invitee members and presidents of all the seven provinces are invited at the emergency meeting to be held at the party head office at 9 am on Saturday,” read the notice issued by Krishna Prasad Paudel, chief secretary at the party office.
The party called the emergency meeting when the faction led by its two general secretaries–Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma–is all set to organise a special general convention on January 11-12 in Kathmandu defying the party establishment’s instruction.
Congress establishment led by party president Sher Bahadur Deuba asked the party leaders not to organise the event and instructed its leaders and members not to attend it.
Hundreds of elected general convention delegates have already arrived in Kathmandu while a large number of others are on the way despite Deuba camp’s attempts to block them, according to Congress leaders who are involved in organising the special general convention.
The faction led by the two general secretaries are working to ready the stage for the event at Pradarshani Marg, Kathmandu.
