Nepali Communist Party opts for all-new faces on proportional representation list
Party decides not to include former lawmakers or ministers in nominations.Post Report
The Nepali Communist Party has decided not to include anyone who has previously served as a member of parliament or minister in its proportional representation (PR) list.
According to the party, individuals elected either through the first-past-the-post or through proportional representation in the past will not be recommended for the upcoming March elections.
The party is set to submit a list of 110 PR candidates, including fresh faces such as Pramesh Hamal and Mitra Pariyar, who have not previously held parliamentary positions.
The secretariat of coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal said that the final list, to be submitted today, the deadline for closed PR nominations, will feature entirely new faces, reflecting the party’s decision to promote fresh leadership.
In November, ten communist parties, including the CPN (Maoist Centre) and CPN (Unified Socialist), announced party unification, forming the unified Nepali Communist Party under the leadership of Dahal, who was chairman of the Maoist Centre. The unification brought together the Maoist Centre, CPN (Unified Socialist), Nepal Socialist Party, and other smaller leftist groups. However, some sections of the parties, such as Janardan Sharma and Ram Karki of the Maoist Centre, and Ghanashyam Bhusal and Ram Kumari Jhakri, among others, of the Unified Socialist, opted out of the unification process.
