The seven opposition parties in Parliament have called for the immediate convening of the winter session, objecting to the issuance of ordinances with long-term consequences while bypassing the legislature.
In a joint statement released after a meeting at Singha Durbar on Friday, the opposition expressed concern that the government’s actions, including ‘bypassing Parliament and making politically biased decisions’, could ultimately undermine democracy and the rule of law.
“Therefore, we request the government to immediately summon the winter session of Parliament, while respecting its dignity and decorum,” the statement said.
Leaders from the CPN (Maoist Centre), Rastriya Swatantra Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, CPN (Unified Socialist), Rastriya Janamorcha, Aam Janata Party, and Nepal Samajbadi Party issued the statement, accusing the government of pursuing an authoritarian path.
The opposition parties have also decided to demand a special session if the government does not initiate the process to summon the winter session immediately.
“We believe that the government’s actions not only undermine the essence and spirit of the constitution but also display a dangerous, arbitrary, and authoritarian tendency that mocks the parliamentary system. We strongly condemn this move to enact ordinances bypassing Parliament that could have long-term consequences for the nation, driven by the vested interests of the government and the ruling coalition,” the statement added.
The seven parties have warned of a strong struggle should the government continue its arbitrary and anti-people actions. They further criticised the government for failing to meet public expectations, giving rise to inflation and corruption, failing to maintain balanced international relations, and attempting to impose authoritarian rule through ordinances while bypassing Parliament.
