A landslide has dammed the Dhindhur river near Larke Bazar in Samdo, ward 1 of Chumnubri Rural Municipality in Gorkha district, forming a landslide-dammed lake.
Locals believe the landslide occurred on Thursday night. Although a lake has formed, water is still flowing, said Mingmar Lama, a resident of Samagaun.
“There is no need to panic at the moment. It does not appear risky, and water is still flowing,” Lama said. “A lake has formed following the landslide. The river originates above Samdo, towards Larke Pass.”
Bhuwan Ojha, information officer at the Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP), said there was no immediate danger as water continued to flow from the lake. However, he urged residents to remain alert. “Residents have inspected the site and confirmed that water is still flowing,” Ojha said. “There is no immediate risk of a sudden breach, but we have urged them to remain alert.”
Locals said the lake was shallow and covered an estimated 500 square metres.
