Family files complaint against city police over self-immolation death
The complaint alleges that municipal police’s decision to lock Ganesh Nepali’s motorcycle led to his death.Post Report
The family of Ganesh Nepali, the ride-hailing driver who died after setting himself on fire following an altercation with municipal police in Tripureshwar, has filed a formal complaint against officers at the Metropolitan Police Range, Kalimati.
The complaint alleges that Nepali's death was the direct consequence of Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s municipal police locking the wheel of his motorcycle outside the Department of Passports. The family has demanded a full investigation and legal action against those responsible.
Senior Superintendent of Police Pawan Bhattarai, chief of the Kathmandu District Police Range, confirmed that the complaint had been registered.
“In a case involving a person's death, a complaint is registered in accordance with the legal process. This complaint has been registered under that procedure,” Bhattarai told Kantipur.
On Sunday, the government and Nepali's family reached a nine-point agreement after days of negotiations.
Under the agreement, the government has committed to forming a high-level investigation committee led by a former judge to establish the facts surrounding the incident. The deal also includes compensation and support measures for Nepali’s family, including employment for his wife and educational assistance for his daughter.
