Ganga Dahal, daughter of Nepali Communist Party coordinator and former prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, says she and her family are prepared to cooperate fully with any investigation the government deems necessary, while rejecting reports suggesting she is preparing to leave the country amid scrutiny over her finances.
In a Facebook post on Friday, Dahal accused sections of social media and online platforms of conducting a “media trial” against her and her family. She alleged that politically motivated actors were spreading misinformation in an effort to damage their reputation.
Why did Dahal issue the statement?
Dahal’s remarks came after reports and social media posts claimed that she was preparing to leave Nepal because she could face investigation or possible arrest.
Responding to those claims, she stated that she and her family were willing to cooperate with any inquiry initiated by the state.
“If there is suspicion against us, the government can investigate any issue it chooses. We are ready to cooperate with any inquiry,” she told Kantipur. “But we have objected to and refuted attempts to malign us through baseless allegations.”
She also claimed that no state agency was currently investigating her or her family.
What reports prompted the controversy
The controversy stemmed from a report published by news website Aajakoartha.com at 11:05 am on June 11 under the headline “Prachanda’s daughter Ganga Dahal preparing to leave the country”.
Citing unnamed sources, the report claimed that Dahal was making preparations to leave Nepal because she could face arrest. It also alleged that members of her family were preparing to obtain Chinese visas and travel to China before moving to another country.
The same report was later republished by Sindhuli Saugat.com and subsequently circulated widely on social media.
A Facebook page called “Digital Vision”, which has around 83,000 followers, shared the report on Saturday morning, citing Aajakoartha.com as the source. Another page, “Indreni Times”, with around 84,000 followers, published a similar post shortly after midnight on Saturday.
An AI-generated image was also shared by a page called “Rabi Lamichhane Supporters”. The image appeared to show a person resembling Pushpa Kamal Dahal presenting a khada to a person resembling Ganga Dahal, with a caption questioning whether she was preparing to leave the country out of fear of arrest.
What is Dahal’s position?
Dahal maintains that the reports are baseless and politically motivated. She says neither she nor her family is attempting to leave Nepal and insists that no state agency has initiated an investigation against them.
At the same time, she has reiterated that if the government decides to investigate any issue concerning her or her family, they will fully cooperate with the process.
She further said that after the untimely death of her brother Prakash Dahal, she had continued to support the party leadership in accordance with party decisions, without seeking any personal gain, position or recognition.
