Police are likely to begin recording statements of former prime minister KP Sharma Oli and former home minister Ramesh Lekhak from Tuesday, according to a police official.
Police proceeded after obtaining court approval to keep them in custody for five days for investigation.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police Ramesh Thapa, the Kathmandu Police Chief, investigators are gathering additional evidence, focusing on the report of the commission formed to probe the September Gen Z movement.
“They have been arrested to implement the report, and accordingly, recording their statements will likely begin from Tuesday,” he said. “Investigating officers are making the necessary preparations.”
However, officials said a decision is yet to be made on how to record their statements, considering health and security concerns.
Officials involved in the investigation said some questioning needs to be based on evidence, and preparations are underway.
While Oli is currently receiving treatment at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Lekhak is being held at the Nepal Police Battalion No. 2 in Maharajgunj.
While Oli was presented for remand extension through an online hearing, Lekhak himself appeared in court.
A commission led by former judge Gauri Bahadur Karki had recommended action against Oli and Lekhak under Sections 181 and 182 of the National Penal (Code) Act, 2074.
Section 181 prohibits causing death through negligent acts, while Section 182 bars causing death through reckless conduct.
If found guilty under Section 181, the law provides for a prison term of three to ten years and a fine ranging from Rs 30,000 to Rs 100,000, while Section 182 carries a penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to Rs 30,000.
