Phewa Dialogue in Chengdu stresses regional cooperation on climate challenges
Scholars, policymakers call for joint strategies on governance, green development and regional integration.Post Report
The second Phewa Dialogue concluded in Chengdu, China, on March 27, with participants stressing the need for stronger regional cooperation to tackle climate change and promote sustainable development in South Asia.
The two-day event, held from March 26 to 27, was jointly organised by the China Centre for South Asia Studies at Sichuan University and Tribhuvan University. It brought together scholars, think tank representatives and policy practitioners from China, South Asia and neighbouring regions.
Discussions centred on the theme “South Asian Development under Climate Change and Governance”, focusing on strategies for climate adaptation and mitigation amid rising global risks. Participants highlighted the need for innovative approaches, deeper economic integration, and the expansion of clean energy and green industries.
Zhang Maoming, China’s ambassador to Nepal, said climate challenges require a collective response, noting that cooperation between China and Nepal has advanced in recent years. He added that China’s green transition is creating opportunities for South Asian countries.
Liu Chao, vice-president of Sichuan University, said the university has maintained long-term cooperation with Tribhuvan University and hosted more than 400 South Asian students, including over 100 from Nepal.
Khadga KC, rector of Tribhuvan University, said the dialogue would help strengthen inter-regional connectivity and understanding.
The forum builds on the inaugural Phewa Dialogue held in Pokhara in December 2024.
