Rain, landslides and snowfall disrupt highways and services across Nepal
Key road sections blocked, vehicles stranded and power supply hit as adverse weather affects multiple districts.Post Report
Adverse weather conditions, including continuous rain, landslides and snowfall, have disrupted transportation and essential services across several parts of the country.
In Nawalparasi District, traffic along the Daunne stretch of the East–West Highway has been completely halted since 11 am due to muddy conditions caused by persistent rainfall.
The section, which had been operating one-way since Friday, was fully blocked after vehicles became stuck in mud and smaller vehicles struggled to navigate potholes. Hundreds of vehicles remain stranded in a long queue, particularly in areas such as Daunne Bazaar, Paisatthi Mod and the downhill stretch.
Authorities had earlier restricted freight vehicles at night, allowing only passenger and essential vehicles. However, overnight rainfall worsened road conditions, leaving even passenger buses unable to operate. Freight vehicles have been held at Bardaghat in the west and Dumkibas in the east to ease congestion.
Meanwhile, a landslide triggered by rainfall disrupted the Kanti Lokpath on Friday evening. The obstruction occurred at Karkibas on the Lalitpur side, halting vehicles travelling between Kathmandu and Hetauda.
Vehicles heading towards Hetauda were stopped at Tikabhairab, while those travelling towards Kathmandu were halted at Thingan. The road was reopened later the same night after local residents and security personnel cleared the debris. No disruption was reported on the Makwanpur section.
In Khotang District, a storm accompanied by rain on Friday evening disrupted the electricity supply after damaging multiple points along the 33 kV transmission line from Jaljale in Udayapur to Buipa.
According to the Nepal Electricity Authority office in Diktel, fallen poles and snapped wires have delayed repairs. The outage has affected communication services and routine office work, while technical teams have been deployed to identify faults.
Further west, falling rocks along the Siddhartha Highway have forced authorities to suspend vehicular movement in the Siddhababa area of Palpa District.
Continuous rainfall since Friday has increased the risk of rockfall along the Tansen–Butwal section, particularly between Dobhan and Chidiya Khola. Police said the suspension is temporary and will be lifted once weather conditions improve. Vehicles have been stopped at both ends of the affected stretch, and travellers have been advised to avoid non-essential journeys.
In the hills of Rukum East District, heavy snowfall since last night has blocked a section of the Mid-Hill Highway in Bhume Rural Municipality–1.
The Lukum–Patihalna stretch remains impassable, leaving dozens of vehicles stranded. Police said seven buses, one jeep and five motorcycles are stuck, with over 250 passengers stranded, including those travelling on overnight buses from Kathmandu.
Ongoing snowfall and rain have made reopening efforts difficult, while communication services in the area have also been disrupted. Authorities said coordination is underway with local bodies to rescue stranded passengers.
