A Nepali worker was injured after a drone crashed into his room at a labour camp in Sohar, Oman, on Friday morning. On the day of the incident, Anil Tamang of Kakani in Nuwakot district was on leave from his construction work and was asleep in his room at the camp. A loud blast woke him from a deep sleep as the drone crashed inside his room at around 7 am.
“The smoke engulfed the whole room,” he told the Post over the phone, “I hurried outside. Only after I started bleeding did I realise shrapnel had hit me.”
Three pieces of shrapnel struck Tamang’s body—two hit his thigh while another struck his chin. “The injuries were not serious, but the wounds were painful.”
Tamang works for a construction company and was staying in the camp with seven others. He said he was unable to learn about the condition of the others as he rushed out to save himself after being injured.
According to the Oman News Agency, two Indian workers were killed in the incident. The number of injured has not been disclosed.
Reports said two drones launched from Iran targeted the area. One fell in an open space while the other landed in the labour camp.
Tamang is currently undergoing treatment at Sohar Hospital. Dewan Khadka, a central member of the Non-Resident Nepali Association in Oman, said the Omani government has arranged his treatment.
“There are no problems with treatment or food. The hospital has managed everything,” Khadka said, adding that Tamang’s condition has improved significantly. His company is preparing to send him home on a two-month leave with full salary and airfare.
Iran has launched attacks targeting the ports of Salalah and Sohar in Oman, where Nepali workers are also employed. An estimated 25,000 Nepali workers are living in Oman. Twenty other Nepalis staying in the same camp as Tamang are safe, it has been said.
One Nepali worker has been killed in the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the US and Israel. Diwas Shrestha of Gorkha, who worked at Abu Dhabi airport in the United Arab Emirates, was killed in an Iranian drone attack two weeks ago.
At least 15 Nepalis were also injured in separate attacks in the UAE, though the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal has not disclosed their identities.
According to the ministry, around 1.7 million Nepali migrant workers are employed in 12 countries across West Asia. Rising tensions linked to the conflict have left many Nepalis in the region worried.
The government has asked Nepali citizens in the region to fill out an online form to register their details. According to the Department of Consular Services of Nepal, 66,721 Nepalis had registered their information by Thursday, with about 5,000 reporting that they felt unsafe.
Authorities at the Department said the collected data were being analysed and further steps would be taken as needed.
The government has also arranged for Nepalis wishing to return home from Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain to do so via Saudi Arabia. Nepalis with valid residence permits can obtain a Saudi visa through the Saudi visa centre. On Thursday, 66 Nepalis stranded in transit in Kuwait were sent to their respective destinations through Saudi Arabia.
