Diamonds worth over Rs69 million that were allegedly smuggled into India via Nepal were seized at Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri, West Bengal, on Tuesday, various Indian media outlets reported. One person has been arrested in connection with the case.
According to reports citing India’s Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), 46 diamonds with a total weight of 808.33 carats (161.66 grams) were recovered from the luggage of Deepak Kumar Mahasuklal Mehta, also known as Deepak Kumar Mehta, a resident of Delhi.
The DRI had reportedly received a tip-off that diamonds would be smuggled by air. Acting on the information, officials kept Mehta under surveillance at the airport as he was preparing to board a flight to Delhi. He was detained after arousing suspicion, and the diamonds were discovered during a baggage check. The gemstones were allegedly concealed in a packet inside his luggage and were not accompanied by any valid documents.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the diamonds were transported by road from Nepal to Siliguri before being taken to Bagdogra Airport for onward shipment to Delhi, according to the reports. Officials were quoted as saying that it is still under investigation whether the diamonds originated in Nepal or were brought to Nepal from another country before being smuggled into India.
A Siliguri court remanded Mehta in judicial custody until February 24. Further investigation is under way to determine whether others were involved in the smuggling operation and to trace the source and intended recipients of the diamonds, Indian media reported.
