Nominations being filed nationwide for House elections
Election Commission says preparations complete as candidates submit papers for March 5 polls.Post Report
Nominations for the first-past-the-post seats in the House of Representatives are being filed across the country on Tuesday for the elections scheduled for March 5.
The Election Commission said it has completed preparations by setting up election offices in all 165 constituencies. It has urged political parties and candidates to avoid showmanship and approach the offices calmly and with dignity.
To reduce crowding and ease the process, the commission has assigned time slots to major parties and candidates.
The commission has already published the final list of candidates under the proportional representation system. Of the 275-member House, 110 will be elected through proportional representation and 165 through the direct system.
Following the Gen Z protests of September 8 and 9 last year, the interim government formed for election purposes has arranged the required resources. The process of selecting election police personnel has also begun.
Most parties have finalised their candidates. The Nepali Congress said candidate selection is still underway in a few constituencies. The CPN-UML said it has finalised candidates in all constituencies. The UML, the Nepali Communist Party, the Rastriya Swatantra Party and others have already issued official nomination letters.
As per the schedule, nominations are being filed nationwide on Tuesday. Candidates must submit copies of their citizenship certificates or voter ID cards, along with proof of inclusion in the final voter list of a municipality or rural municipality. The commission has requested that candidates bring all additional required documents.
The commission said all preparations are complete and expressed confidence that the nomination process will proceed smoothly nationwide. The election is being held after the House elected in 2022 was dissolved following the September protests.
