BP Highway reopens after five-day disruption
Traffic resumed Tuesday morning on an under-construction permanent track after floods damaged the highway at eight locations.Jyoti Shrestha
The BP Highway reopened on Tuesday morning after floods triggered by heavy rain blocked the road for five days, disrupting traffic between Bhakundebesi in Kavre and Sindhuli.
Flooding in the Roshi river had blocked the highway at eight locations along the section.
Suman Yogesh, chief of the Road Division Office in Bhaktapur, said vehicles began using a permanent track under construction at around 10am on Tuesday.
The floods damaged the highway’s permanent road structure, forcing authorities to divert traffic onto a temporary track along the Roshi river bed. Vehicles have now been shifted to the permanent track under construction.
Yogesh said work on the track had been halted for now because the river was still carrying a high volume of water.
“The river is still flowing at a high level. So we have stopped construction work for now and opened the road to traffic through the permanent track that is under construction,” he said.
Heavy rain had also washed away sections of the road, damaged diversions and affected other road infrastructure at several points along the highway.
