Inquiry commission summons ex-home minister Lekhak for statement on September 8–9 incidents
Panel gives the former minister seven days to appear; plans to send notice to ex-prime minister Oli next.Post Report
The inquiry commission investigating the violent incidents of September 8–9 has issued a letter summoning former home minister Ramesh Lekhak to record his statement, asking him to be present within seven days.
Bigyan Raj Sharma, commission spokesperson, said the letter was dispatched to Lekhak on Tuesday.
The commission has begun calling political leaders after completing the interrogation of officials who held administrative and security responsibilities during the movement.
The commission said it has also prepared to send a summons to former prime minister and UML chair KP Sharma Oli.
The government had formed a three-member inquiry commission under retired judge Gauri Bahadur Karki to probe the excessive use of force and other violent incidents during the Gen Z movement.
The youth-led uprising, organised against corruption, bad governance and nepotism, toppled the KP Sharma Oli-led government, following which an interim government led by Sushila Karki was formed on September 12.
Initially given a three-month mandate, the commission recently received a one-month extension. It has yet to record the statements of several political figures, including former prime minister Oli and former home minister Lekhak.
Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission has completed its questioning of Lekhak and has begun recording statements from other ministers who were members of the Security Council at the time.
The commission said it expects political leaders to cooperate as it proceeds with the next phase of the investigation.
