Poor communication in the remote area has made rescue efforts difficult, police say.Kedar Shiwakoti
Four climbers, who were injured after being caught in an avalanche while ascending Yalung Ri in the Rolwaling mountain range of Dolakha district, were rescued on Tuesday.
According to Dolakha police Chief Gyan Kumar Mahato, they were airlifted from the mountain’s base camp and are being taken to Kathmandu by Heli Everest.
Seven climbers—five foreigners and two Nepalis—were killed in the avalanche on Monday.
A total of 12 climbers—both Nepali and foreign—had set out for the Yalung Ri expedition. Heli Everest has been carrying out search and rescue operations since early Tuesday, led by Mingma Sherpa of Seven Summit Treks.
Police said poor communication in the remote area has made rescue efforts difficult. Army, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Police teams heading on foot to the site have not yet reached the avalanche zone and stayed overnight along the route.
The avalanche struck around 9am on Monday while the team was climbing the 5,630-metre-high Yalung Ri.
The climbers had spent the night at Na village before heading to the Yalung Ri base camp on Sunday, following a brief improvement in the weather.
The Rolwaling Valley had experienced continuous snow and poor weather conditions for several days before the tragedy. The local people of Na had descended to Beding following continuous snowfall. “The team set out only after the weather cleared on Sunday, but the snowpack remained unstable,” Mahato explained.
