Five eastern roads remain blocked
Authorities say efforts to clear landslides hampered by incessant rain.Laxmi Gautam
Five major roads in eastern Nepal remain blocked due to incessant rainfall. The Tamor Corridor has been closed since Friday morning after floods in the Nawa river damaged sections of the road, while the Pheme river swept away a diversion along the Phidim–Phalaut section.
According to the Infrastructure Development Office in Panchthar, rainfall has yet to subside, preventing road clearance works.
Landslides have also blocked multiple points along the Ranke–Rabi–Bhedetar road section, making it impassable for the past three days.
Similarly, the Mid-Hill Highway’s Tehrathum section was cut off on Sunday morning after a landslide, though clearance work has begun, said the District Police Office, Tehrathum.
The obstruction on the Rajduwali stretch of the Mechi Highway has stranded hundreds of passengers. Although the Road Division Office in Ilam had temporarily opened it for small vehicles a day earlier, a fresh road collapse overnight has halted all traffic.
A technical team has been deployed to assess the extent of the damage, and travellers have been advised to avoid the route until further notice, said Pawan Bhattarai, chief of the Road Division Office, Ilam.
