Gyanu Rana to perform in October Paleti
Veteran Rana to honour her father Dharma Raj Thapa in a three-generation musical celebration at Nepalaya’s ‘R’ Shala.Post Report
The upcoming edition of Paleti, the long-running musical series organised by Nepalaya, will feature veteran singer Gyanu Rana. The event will take place this Friday and Saturday at Nepalaya’s ‘R’ Shala in Kalikasthan.
This edition of Paleti will also pay tribute to legendary folk artist Dharma Raj Thapa, Rana’s late father. Inspired by him to pursue singing, Gyanu Rana will be joined on stage by her son Bikash Jung Rana, who will perform some of Thapa’s evergreen classics — making the evening a creative confluence of three generations.
Rana, whose melodious voice has given life to countless Nepali songs, is renowned primarily for her folk renditions but is equally acclaimed for her modern, ghazal, and devotional numbers. Her duets with the late Narayan Gopal, including ‘Manchheko Maya Yaha’ and ‘Sirima Siri Ni Kancha’, remain beloved to this day. Likewise, her performance of Gopal Yonjan’s timeless Tamang selo ‘Chyangba Hoe Chyangba’ continues to resonate with new audiences.
In the upcoming Paleti, Gyanu Rana’s duet numbers will feature singer Rupak Chaudhary. According to Paleti coordinator Aabhas, “Gyanu didi stands at the confluence of Nepali folk and modern music. This edition will offer nostalgia for the older generation and a taste of organic authenticity for the younger audience.”
The programme will include nearly a dozen and a half songs, such as ‘Chautarima Mai Base Hola Ki’, ‘Bhijyo Timro Rato Pachhyauri’, ‘Aaja Madal Bajeko Kina’, ‘Saili Rimai Chaunri Gai’, and ‘Hariyo Dandamathi’.
Rana, who began her musical journey at the age of 14 after her father took her to Radio Nepal, expressed deep emotion and excitement for the event. “It feels like yesterday when my father held my hand and took me to Radio Nepal. An era has passed since then. I have received immense love from listeners, and as long as my voice supports me, I will keep singing,” she said, adding that she hopes Paleti audiences will continue to shower her with affection.
Started two decades ago, Paleti has evolved into one of Nepal’s most cherished musical series. This month’s edition will be held on October 31 and November 1 at Nepalaya’s ‘R’ Shala.
