Rising Saptakoshi River prompts safety alert near barrage
Armed police urge residents to stay indoors as all barrage gates opened due to water flow exceeding danger level.
Post Report
Rising water levels in the Saptakoshi River have prompted the Armed Police Force to urge residents to stay indoors unless necessary.
All gates of the Koshi barrage have been opened after the river’s flow exceeded the danger level. Armed Police teams are making loudspeaker announcements, warning that the river has crossed the danger threshold.
“Inform the nearest security agency if any problem arises,” officers advised. According to Chief District Officer Tuwaraj Pokharel, at 9am, the river’s flow was measured at 431,525 cubic metres per second, prompting the opening of all barrage gates.
Movement across the barrage bridge has been suspended due to the increasing water levels. Authorities in India’s Supaul district have also been on alert since Saturday in response to potential flooding in the river.
