The Narayanghat-Muglin road has remained blocked since Friday evening after a landslide struck the highway at Tuinkhola near Muglin.
Clearance work is ongoing, but authorities say it is still uncertain when the road will reopen.
The Division Road Office in Bharatpur has urged travellers to use alternative routes. Vehicles heading west from Kathmandu can take the Prithvi Highway via Pokhara or travel through Bhimad along the Kaligandaki Corridor.
Those travelling to and from the east can use the Naubise–Daman–Hetauda road. Another option is to follow the Kaligandaki Corridor from Gaindakot in Nawalpur via Dedgaun and Bhimad to join the Prithvi Highway towards Muglin.
The closure has caused major disruptions during the Dashain travel rush, leaving around 11,500 vehicles stranded on the highway, according to the District Traffic Office. Hundreds of passengers have faced inconvenience as only about half of the debris was cleared by Saturday evening.
No pedestrian passage is available across the landslide site. However, travellers have been crossing the Trishuli river near Muglin and using an under-construction parallel road to reach a suspension bridge five kilometres away to rejoin the Narayanghat–Muglin road. Many passengers are using this dirt track on foot, by motorcycle, or in small vehicles.
Small four-wheelers and motorcycles can also take a rural hilly road branching off near Majhimtar on the Prithvi Highway through Jogimara, Kot, and Banspur, eventually reaching Shaktikhor in Chitwan.
Locals in Mayatar village said some vans and motorcycles are using the route via Mauwakhola. The road from Banspur to Shaktikhor is blacktopped and passable.
