The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has demanded the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and called for fresh elections, saying the current government has lost its legitimacy.
In a statement on Monday, RSP General Secretary Kabindra Burlakoti condemned the way the government handled the Gen Z protest in Kathmandu.
“The relevance of the current government has completely ended. We demand the prime minister’s immediate resignation. A high-level judicial probe commission should be formed to investigate the incident and take stern action against the home minister and all others responsible,” Burlakoti said.
The party also said that the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML coalition have failed to resolve national issues.
“The Federal Parliament, dominated by Congress and UML, has lost legitimacy as it cannot address national concerns. We therefore demand a fresh mandate,” the statement read.
RSP, the fourth-largest in the federal parliament, warned of rising public anger, saying, “People will not accept efforts to extend misrule by shedding the blood of their own children. This authoritarian rule will be met with mass resistance.”
Nineteen people were killed and hundreds were injured in Kathmandu and Itahari on Monday after police opened fire on demonstrators. The injured are undergoing treatment at various hospitals across the country.
