The Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal (JSP-Nepal) has indicated it may reconsider its support for the KP Sharma Oli-led government.
In a central committee meeting held on June 21-22, the party concluded that the government has failed to deliver on key issues such as controlling corruption, ensuring good governance, and improving the economy.
Party spokesperson Manish Kumar Suman said the meeting, chaired by party president Upendra Yadav, instructed the parliamentary party to make a final decision on whether to continue backing the government.
“The current government has not met expectations on constitutional amendments, economic recovery, or governance. The central committee has therefore directed the parliamentary party to reconsider its position,” Suman said.
JSP-Nepal, which has five members in the House of Representatives and three in the National Assembly, extended support to the Oli administration without joining the Cabinet.
The timing of this announcement is significant. JSP-Nepal’s role has become increasingly important in legislative processes, including recent deliberations over government ordinances in the National Assembly.
The Congress-UML coalition, which commands a strong majority in the House of Representatives, doesn’t have a majority in the National Assembly.
The Oli government had failed to endorse the land ordinance from the upper chamber due to objections from the Yadav-led JSP-Nepal.
