Court orders release of RPP leader Rabindra Mishra on Rs300,000 bail
Senior vice-chair of Rastriya Prajatantra Party had been charged with sedition and organised crime over violent March protest.
Post Report
The Kathmandu District Court on Monday ordered the release of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) senior vice-chair Rabindra Mishra on a bail of Rs300,000 in connection with the violent pro-monarchy protest held in Tinkune on March 28.
According to court spokesperson Deepak Kumar Shrestha, a single bench of Judge Tara Devi Maharjan issued the release order after Mishra appeared before the court to respond to charges of sedition, criminal mischief, organised crime, among others.
The court had previously declared Mishra and RPP general secretary Dhawal Shamsher Rana absconding after both failed to appear before authorities despite multiple summons. Their legal guarantors were fined Rs25,000 each earlier this month for failing to ensure their appearance.
Rana, who is undergoing treatment for cancer, was released on Rs300,000 bail on Monday evening. Mishra had been detained earlier and later released following a habeas corpus petition filed by his wife, Sarika Karki. Both leaders were central figures in the planning and execution of the March 28 rally, which turned violent, resulting in the deaths of two individuals—including a journalist—and injuries to several others.
Durga Prasai, a prominent pro-monarchy activist and the designated "field commander" of the Tinkune protest, has already been sent to judicial custody pending trial.
The March rally, which called for the restoration of Nepal’s Hindu monarchy, was organised by a coalition of royalist groups under the leadership of Panchayat-era politician Nabaraj Subedi. The RPP and Kamal Thapa-led RPP-Nepal had lent official backing to the movement. Mishra served as the protest committee’s member secretary, while Rana coordinated the mobilisation committee.
