Various factions including RPP and RPP-Nepal join the agitation under the leadership of Subedi.
Post Report
The newly formed alliance of pro-monarchy forces has declared an indefinite nationwide protest from May 29, calling for the revival of the monarchy through civil disobedience and mass mobilisation.
The announcement was made at a press meet on Thursday in Kathmandu by Nabaraj Subedi, coordinator of the joint people’s movement committee.
Subedi, who also leads the alliance, stated the protests aim to generate “powerful public pressure” for restoring the monarchy, which he claims is essential to ending ‘authoritarianism’.
He underscored that the movement would remain non-violent, using methods such as satyagraha and civil disobedience.
The announcement was made at the press meet jointly addressed by Subedi, Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) chair Rajendra Lingden, RPP-Nepal chair Kamal Thapa, among other pro-monarchy leaders.
The committee was formed on March 17 under the leadership of Subedi, a Panchayat-era leader. The committee later designated controversial businessman Durga Prasai, ‘the field commander’ of the March 28 protest.
Prasai is currently in police custody following a court order by the Kathmandu District Court, which remanded him for his role in the violent Tinkune protest on March 28. The rally, led by Prasai, escalated into violence, resulting in the deaths of a journalist and a Kirtipur resident, and the destruction of over 40 buildings and 69 vehicles.
The committee and the RPP are pressing the government for the release of RPP leaders including its senior vice-chair Rabindra Mishra arrested after the Tinkune protest.
