Adhikari added to governor recommendation committee
After a delay in the recommendation process, former governor Bijaya Nath Bhattarai had resigned from the committee last Tuesday.
Post Report
The government has reconstituted the committee to recommend the name of Nepal Rastra Bank governor.
A Cabinet meeting on Wednesday decided to include immediate past governor Maha Prasad Adhikari in the three-member committee, a minister told the Post.
The committee, led by the finance minister, should have a former governor and an individual with repute in the field of financial and economic sector as its two other members.
Besides Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel and Adhikari, the committee comprises noted economist Biswo Paudel.
After a delay in the recommendation process, former governor Bijaya Nath Bhattarai resigned from the committee last Tuesday.
Bhattarai, who was nominated to the committee formed by the Cabinet on March 24 just ahead of the end of Adhikari’s term, said he decided to quit the committee as it had failed to hold even a single meeting.
However, despite the legal provision that a new governor should be appointed at least a month before the incumbent retires, the committee has remained inactive.
Finance Minister Paudel has appointed Deputy Governor Nilam Dhungana Timilsina as acting governor.
Several candidates are aspiring for the coveted position but there is a formal understanding between the ruling parties that Executive Director at Nepal Rastra Bank Gunakar Bhatta should be appointed the next governor.
But his appointment is delayed as a case pending in the Supreme Court alleges Bhatta does not meet the qualification and criteria to be the governor.
