Court remands Durga Prasai to 12 days in custody over Tinkune violence
A single bench of judge Shishirraj Dhakal at Kathmandu District Court issues the order.
Post Report
The Kathmandu District Court on Friday remanded controversial businessman Durga Prasai to 12 days in custody for his alleged involvement in the violent pro-monarchy protest in Tinkune on March 28.
A single bench of judge Shishirraj Dhakal approved the remand following a request from the police, said court information officer Deepak Kumar Shrestha. Prasai’s bodyguard, Deepak Khadka, who was arrested with him, has also been remanded for the same period.
As Prasai is a cancer patient, the court has directed the police to arrange for his medical treatment as per a doctor’s recommendation.
Prasai, who led the violent protest, was arrested in India and brought to Nepal via the Kakarbhitta border before being flown to Kathmandu from Bhadrapur by Buddha Air. Police said he had fled following the March 28 incident and was located by the Special Bureau with the help of three teams deployed to India. However, Prasai’s aides claimed he had surrendered to the Assam Police. The Nepal Police later issued a statement saying he was detained from Bhadrapur, Jhapa.
During the protest, Prasai breached a police barricade and incited his supporters, who went on to vandalise, loot, and torch at least 40 public and private buildings, including media offices and commercial establishments. Sixty-nine vehicles were damaged in the violence.
Two people—journalist Suresh Rajak and Kirtipur resident Sabin Maharjan—were killed, while 129 others were injured. Five remain hospitalised.
Dozens have been arrested in connection with the unrest, including Rastriya Prajatantra Party vice-chair Rabindra Mishra and general secretary Dhawal Shamsher Rana. They are under investigation on charges including sedition, organised crime, and public disorder.
