Agitating Parliament staff, government panel ink seven-point deal
Government agrees to raise allowances.Post Report
A government panel and agitating Parliament staff on Monday forged a seven-point agreement. With the deal, the agitating staff have ended their protests.
The agreement was reached following talks between the representatives of parliament staff and a three-member committee led by Padam Giri, minister for law, justice, and parliamentary affairs.
According to the agreement, the government has agreed to raise the rental allowance, educational allowance, and meal expenses for employees working at the Parliament Secretariat.
As per the deal, the monthly rental allowances for gazetted officers will be raised by Rs3,500, while non-gazetted staff will receive an increase of Rs3,000.
Similarly, an agreement has been reached to raise the monthly education allowance by Rs300 and raise the daily meal expenses provided for overtime duty by Rs100. The amount will be released monthly.
The government has committed to gradually fulfilling all of their demands.
Starting last week, the Parliament employees refused to work overtime, directly affecting budget deliberations. Despite efforts by the lower house Speaker and the chairperson of the National Assembly, the issue could not be resolved as the government was reluctant to pay the staffers for extra work. They had lobbied with Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Finance Minister Barsha Man Pun jointly and individually to release the allowance but to no avail.
With no sign of the employees giving up their protest, the government on Sunday had formed a three-member committee led by Minister Giri.
