CIAA files graft case against six, including Bagmati mayor, deputy mayor
The anti-graft body accuses them of irregularities while constructing dam.Post Report
A corruption case has been filed against six individuals, including the suspended Mayor of Bagmati Municipality in Sarlahi Bharat Bahadur Thapa and Deputy Mayor Leela Kumari Moktan, for alleged irregularities.
On Tuesday, the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority filed an Rs302 million case at the Special Court against Thapa, Moktan, the former chief administrative officer Bimal Kumar Pokharel, the former chief engineer Sagar Paudel, the former account officer Bishwa Raj Pokharel, and the former head of the District Coordination Committee Methur Chaudhary.
They have been accused of irregularities during the construction of a dam.
According to Narahari Ghimire, spokesperson for the CIAA, Mayor Thapa and all other defendants have been charged with three offenses under the Prevention of Corruption Act 2002.
A complaint was filed with the CIAA alleging irregularities in the sale and distribution of riverbed materials excavated during the construction of the Bharat Tal, situated in wards 4 and 12 of the municipality.
Mayor Thapa faces another corruption case. On April 27, the CIAA filed a corruption case at the Special Court against Mayor Thapa on the charge of acquiring wealth illegally.
The anti-graft agency has alleged that Thapa accumulated property worth Rs 53.3 million through misuse of his position from September 2017 to February 2023. The agency has sought recovery of the amount along with an equal fine.
An investigation conducted by the commission revealed that Thapa possesses property valued at Rs132 million. However, the source of only Rs78.6 million of this property could be verified, CIAA said.
According to the commission, his wife Reshmi Kumari Ghimire Thapa, brother Ram Kumar Thapa and sister-in-law Dwarika Raut have also been named defendants in the case as the illegal property was also transferred to their names.
