Kathmandu District Court on Sunday issued an arrest warrant against two more people including a former lawmaker in connection with the fake Bhutanese refugee scam.
According to police officials, warrants have been issued against Nepali Congress leader and former lawmaker Ang Tawa Sherpa and Pratik Thapa, son of UML vice-chair Ram Bahadur Thapa, who is also a former home minister.
Sherpa, who was elected as a Constituent Assembly member in the 2013 elections from Ramechhap-1, is currently the general convention representative of the largest party.
Sherpa had reportedly met two people accused in the case—Keshav Dulal and Sanu Bhandari—in police custody, recently.
Police raided Sherpa’s residence at Maijubahal in Kathmandu on Saturday.
Likewise, the court issued the warrant against Thapa after police found evidence of his alleged involvement in the scandal.
Police so far have arrested 12 people including a former home minister Bal Krishna Khand and a former home secretary Tek Narayan Pandey in connection with the scam in which scores of people were duped of millions of rupees in the pretext of sending them to the United States as Bhutanese refugees.
A sitting lawmaker Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, who is also party secretary of CPN-UML, is absconding after the police issued an arrest warrant against him in the same case. The Police have already arrested Rayamajhi’s son Sandeep in connection with the same scam.
