The three-day central committee meeting of the CPN-UML concluded on Saturday, urging the government to probe all corruption scandals including the one suspected in the Maoist cantonments disbanded a decade ago.
The main opposition party referred to the case in which Maoist leaders allegedly embezzled millions of rupees distributed by the government to the Maoist combatants who were ‘disqualified’ for integration into the national army after the former rebel party joined the peace process.
“The meeting calls on the agencies concerned to investigate all cases impartially. The party assures full cooperation to the authorities in the investigation process,” reads one of the 16 points of the proposal passed by the fifth central committee meeting that commenced on Thursday.
“Lack of impartial investigation into such incidents and refusal to bring the culprits to book has posed questions to the democratic system, parties and the political leadership.”
The meeting has also demanded an unbiased investigation into the fake Bhutanese refugee scam and maximum penalty for the guilty.
“The involvement of the top home ministry leadership shows how the crime against the state was committed in an organised way. This seriously dents the country’s reputation in the international arena,” the party said.
But the proposal is silent on its secretary and lawmaker Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, who is absconding after a court issued an arrest warrant against him in the scam in which scores of people were swindled in the pretext of sending them to the United States as Bhutanese refugees.
UML leaders including Indrajit Rai, security advisor to the former Home Minister and current UML vice-chair Ram Bahadur Thapa, and Rai’s son Niraj Rai, have already been arrested, among others.
The meeting also demanded the government address the grievances of loan shark victims by arranging necessary legal and procedural apparatus, take measures to tame inflation and address economic woes.
Commenting on protests against the naming of Koshi Province, the party has urged all the concerned not to engage in ‘extremist, communal and anti-people activities’.
Such activities that disturb communal harmony, ignite communal hatred, and create chaos in society have been used as a political tool against CPN-UML and the chief minister, the party said. “They are inappropriate, undemocratic and against people’s aspirations.”
