Suspended Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana has appeared before the Impeachment Recommendation Committee of the Parliament to furnish his clarification on the allegations levelled against him.
The recommendation committee on August 24 had decided to summon him for Wednesday to defend himself.
Responding to a call from the recommendation committee, different organisations including Former Judges Forum, Nepal Bar Association and Supreme Court Barn Association have submitted the list of Rana’s “wrong doings” and “proof” to substantiate charges against him.
Talking to the Post on Tuesday Ram Bahadur Bista, who is chairing the committee as the eldest member, said they are planning to submit the report at the House of Representatives in a week or so.
“We want the motion to be put to vote before the term of the House expires,” he said.
As many as 98 lawmakers of the ruling coalition—the Nepali Congress, the CPN (Maoist Centre) and the CPN (Unified Socialist)—had on February 13 registered the motion in Parliament against Rana with 21 charges.
They claimed that Rana had promoted corruption in the judiciary, given access to middlemen for bench shopping, which is a term used for the unscrupulous practice of selecting benches through middlemen to ensure a favourable order, bargained with executives and failed to discharge his duties effectively among others.
Rana remains suspended from the day the motion was registered.
It requires a two-thirds majority in the 271-strong House to endorse the motion.
If the main opposition, CPN-UML, does not support the motion, it is certain to fail.
