A 15th-century wooden idol of Nrityadevi that was stolen from a Buddhist gumba in Patan in the 1970s has been located in a private collection in Florida, USA.
“Lost Arts of Nepal”, a group working towards identifying and locating lost artefacts from Nepal scattered around the world, said that the idol was last on sale at the New York centre of the Bonhams in 2019.
The idol was removed from the venue before it was auctioned off.
After it was stolen, the statue was first found in 1982 in New York.
Archaeologist Mary Shepherd Slusser in her article titled, “Conservation Notes on Some Nepalese Paintings,” has mentioned the history and archaeology of the artifact.
Earlier, information regarding three other statues–Nrityadevi, Chintamani Lokeshwor and Tara–that were stolen from I-Baha Bahi, Patan, had been made public stating that the stolen artefacts were at museums in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago.
