Parties are in hectic negotiations as MCC deadline is Monday.Post Report
The scheduled meeting of the Parliament has been postponed for Sunday afternoon. As per the government request, the scheduled meeting of the parliament on Friday has been called off.
“On government’s request today’s meeting of the House of Representatives has been postponed until 1 pm Sunday ,” said Gopal Nath Yogi, secretary at the House of Representatives.
The deadline to ratify the MCC compact from the House is Monday, and political parties are conducting hectic negotiations.
Earlier on Thursday also the scheduled meeting was postponed for Friday at the last moment after the Business Advisory Committee decided to begin discussions on the Millennium Challenge Corporation-Nepal Compact.
After the ruling coalition partners Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) and CPN (Unified Socialist) refused to vote in favour of Compact, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba initiated talks with the main opposition CPN-UML to ensure the compact ratification. However the main opposition has not given any concrete word to Deuba and the ruling coalition also failed to reach a consensus on the $500 million American grant.
The US grant agreement was tabled at the Parliament on February 20.
