Champions Satdobato Youth Club's unbeaten run came to an end after they faced first league defeat in their penultimate match going down 2-1 against a lowly Madhyapur Youth Association in the Martyrs Memorial 'B' Division League football tournament at the ANFA Complex, Satdobato, on Monday.
Bottom of the table, Pulchowk also pulled off a surprise 2-1 victory over fifth place Ranipokhari Corner Team (RCT) to test their first win in the late fixture at the same venue.
Kailash Lamichhane Khatri and Sunny Lama scored in both halves for Madhyapur while substitute Maldina Angthupo netted for Satdobato.
Satdobato, the only unbeaten team already assured of title and promotion to 'A' Division, slumped to their first defeat in 10th match. They have 25 points and are three points ahead of second placed Khumaltar. They will win the championship trophy even if they lose their next fixture and Khumaltar win due to head-to-head record over their closest rivals. Satdobato have defeated them 1-0 in their match.
Madhyapur leapfrogged three sports up to sixth position with 13 points in their kitty after winning fourth match in a row.
Lamichhane Khatri put Satdobato ahead in the 26th when he headed skipper Ronish Dheke Rajbahak’s right flank cross from the area. Substitute Angthupo restored parity in the 50th after he fired past an advancing Madhyapur custodian Akash Ranabhat from the edge of the area. Lama ensured victory for Madhyapur eight minutes later, when he was allowed a free header inside the area to convert captain Ranabhat’s cross.
The late match saw Arun Kumar Rana and Kismat Limbu score for Pulchowk while captain Amar Dangol netted for RCT. The first win of the league campaign earned Pulchowk five points and gave them a slim hope of avoiding relegation with only a final round match left. RCT are fifth in the standings with 13 points in their account.
The bottom placed team would be relegated to 'C' Division at the completion of the tournament. Only one point separates them from the second from bottom Jhamsikhel Youth Club. They could avoid relegation in the event they win their last fixture and hope that Jhamsikhel lose or draw their match.
Rana, left unmarked in the area, made an easy tapping in the fifth minute to open scoring for Pulchowk converting forward Kismat Limbu's cross from the area. RCT forward Dangol equalised two minutes before the break with a jumping header from the area.
Limbu scored the decisive goal for Pulchowk in the 77th minute when he applied a finishing touch from the close range collecting Min Bahadur Gurung's scorcher stopped by diving goalie Saroj Tamang.
