India calls Nepal’s new political map cartographic assertion
New Delhi says it hopes that the Nepali leadership will create a positive atmosphere for diplomatic dialogue to resolve the outstanding boundary issues.Post Report
India said on Wednesday that Nepal’s publication of a new political map including Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura is cartographic assertion and contrary to the bilateral understanding to resolve the outstanding boundary issues through diplomatic dialogue.
In a statement, Anurag Srivastava, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, called Nepal’s move a unilateral act which is not based on historical facts and evidence.
Nepal released its new political map including Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura within Nepal’s borders on Wednesday afternoon, a day after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli told the Parliament that the territories belong to Nepal and that his government would reclaim them.
India, however, has described Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura as its territories.
"The Government of Nepal has released a revised official map of Nepal today that includes parts of Indian territory. This unilateral act is not based on historical facts and evidence,” said Srivastava. “It is contrary to the bilateral understanding to resolve the outstanding boundary issues through diplomatic dialogue. Such artificial enlargement of territorial claims will not be accepted by India.”
The new political map was approved by the Oli Cabinet on Monday.
“Nepal is well aware of India’s consistent position on this matter and we urge the Government of Nepal to refrain from such unjustified cartographic assertion and respect India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” said Srivastava. “We hope that the Nepali leadership will create a positive atmosphere for diplomatic dialogue to resolve the outstanding boundary issues."
