Does blackface have a place in Nepali comedy? Probably not
Although blackface videos have dropped in number since the Dhurmus-Suntali controversy, many comedians say they don’t understand what is wrong with colouring one’s face darker to play a character. Madhesi actors and activists, however, find such portrayals racist and offensive because it stereotypes a vastly diverse community.
Animal rights activists protest Diktel authorities’ brutal act against dogs
A day after the news about the suspicious deaths of cows in Surkhet came to light, a video of two men torturing a stray dog went viral on social media.
In the video, taken by Bajindra Bista in Diktel, Khotang, on August 31, two men are seen approaching a dog resting in front of a house.
One of the men, with a wooden plank in his hand, approaches the dog and hits it mercilessly while the other kicks and tries to lasso it. When the dog can’t take the continuous torture any longer and becomes inactive, one of the men drags the dog onto the tractor, which is already filled with stray dogs—some are dead, others are semi-conscious.
According to local authorities, the canines “are being caught” as part of their campaign to rid the town of stray dogs.
Millions stolen by ATM hackers exposes vulnerability of Nepali banks
On Saturday night, Zhu Lianang was arrested from a Nabil Bank ATM booth in Durbar Marg while trying to withdraw cash. Acting on a tip-off, the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Circle caught Zhu, a Chinese national, in the act of withdrawing thousands in cash from the ATM using cloned debit cards.
Upon interrogation, Zhu named four others—Lin Jianmeng, Luo Jialei, Zhu Liangang, Qiu-Yunqing and Chen Bin Bin, all Chinese citizens—as complicit in the hacking spree.
Nepal is in the midst of hotel building spree. But will the tourists come?
Nepal’s hotel industry is once again on a building spree. At least a dozen five-star hotels are under construction across the country, fuelled by optimism that the Visit Nepal 2020 will draw two million tourists and that growth will continue in the years ahead.
According to industry insiders, more than Rs45 billion has been injected into the hospitality industry.
Appointment of India’s lead in EPG as state governor casts doubt over future of group’s report
Amid uncertainty over the submission of a report prepared by the Eminent Persons’ Group, the appointment of Bhagat Singh Koshyari, the coordinator of the group from the Indian side, as the governor of the Maharashtra state of India has further added to the confusion over the fate of the report.
The Nepali side had largely believed that Koshyari is the only person who could push for the acceptance of the report in New Delhi, not only because he headed the Indian side in the group but also because of his influence in the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
