Dementia is a growing health epidemic, but no one is paying attention
More than 78,000 Nepalis suffer from dementia, a neurodegenerative disease which causes memory impairment, loss of cognitive and social skills, and eventually, the ability to live an independent life, according to the Alzheimer’s Disease International, a federation of Alzheimer’s associations around the world. Some estimates put that number even higher—one estimate, calculated using the five percent prevalence rate, says at least 135,000 Nepalis suffer from the disease. And the number is expected to double every 20 years.
New tourism minister faces a slew of challenges, especially on policy
Nepal’s tourism industry is at a crossroads. Tourist arrivals hit a record 1.17 million in 2018, with nearly 300,000 going trekking. Five new five-star hotels have been built in the last two years alone, and two international airports will be coming into operation in the next two years. Still, as Yogesh Bhattarai takes office as the newly appointed tourism minister, there are a series of challenges that await him.
Breastfeeding is not easy for working mothers in Capital
For many lactating mothers in Kathmandu, breastfeeding their infants is a challenge. And though government agencies have been trying to establish breastfeeding corners for new mothers, a lack of childcare facilities makes it difficult for many to bring their children to their offices.
Upper Trishuli 3A hydropower plant ready to go full throttle
In a final trial run, the Upper Trishuli 3A hydropower plant has started injecting 60 megawatts into the national grid upon completion of construction work at the project site in Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts.
According to project officials, the power generated by its second turbine was synchronised with the grid on Wednesday, two months after one of its turbines roared into life.
Province 2 files writ at Supreme Court against central government’s intervention
Challenging the central government’s move to merge the Sagarnath Forest Development Project with the Timber Corporation of Nepal, the Province 2 government on Thursday filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court. It has charged the central government with violating the jurisdiction of the provincial government.
