Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on Tuesday filed a corruption case at the Special Court against Shyam Krishna Chwamu Shrestha, one of the accused in the 33-kg gold smuggling scandal, on the charge of amassing illegally earned properties.
The anti-graft body has filed a case charging him of accumulating properties worth Rs140 million illegally, the CIAA said.

Shrestha, who was working as a radio operator at Tribhuvan International Airport based customs office, is currently suspended as part of the investigation on the gold smuggling case.
According to CIAA Spokesperson Rameshwor Dangal, this is the second largest case ever filed by the CIAA on the charge of accumulation of illegally earned properties.
Shrestha earned a total of Rs96.3 million through legal means since March 18, 1997.

But his most recent expenditures and investments stand at Rs197.45 million. This means that he has failed to show source of income for Rs101.14 million. After the prices of these properties surged, additional Rs44.97 million was added in property whose source is not clear, according to the CIAA.
Earlier, on January 7, the anti-graft body had filed a case against former managing director of Nepal Oil Corporation Gopal Bahadur Khadka for amassing illegal property worth Rs180 million in just five years since March 15, 2013, in the largest ever case of illegal property earning, according to CIAA..
