Medics attending to Dr Govinda KC have started administering antibiotics through injection to control infection in his right lung.

Dr Bijendra Krishna Shah, acting medical superintendent at Ilam District Hospital, said that antibiotics were administered on Tuesday with KC’s consent.

The anti-corruption crusader, who has been staging fast-unto-death strike for the past seven days, was admitted to the district hospital on Monday morning after he contracted pneumonia.

The agitating surgeon has infection in his right lung, the doctors said adding that he has been also suffering from low blood oxygen level, low blood pressure and arrhythmia.

KC’s blood oxygen level and pulse have been gradually decreasing, said Shah. According to him, the blood oxygen level and pulse were recorded 82 percent and 35 respectively on Tuesday. Considering KC’s deteriorating health, they have suggested that the fasting surgeon be immediately taken to a hospital with better facilities.

KC has been demanding that the government implement the Medical Education Bill in its entirety as its team had agreed, persuading him to end his 15th hunger strike after 27 days.

He started his 16th hunger strike from a private house in Ilam since January 9 after the Education and Health Committee of Parliament endorsed the contested report with added provisions on the bill. The discussion on the contested report and added provisions will begin in the next Parliament meeting scheduled for January 18.

B&C chief Prasai threatens media

Durga Prasad Prasai, executive director of Jhapa-based B&C Medical College Teaching Hospital and Research Centre Pvt Ltd, verbally abused Kantipur Media Group and other mainstream media for covering Dr Govinda KC’s hunger strike.

Talking to the Post’s correspondent in Ilam Biplaw Bhattarai over telephone on Tuesday, Prasai accused the media of supporting KC and ignoring agitation of one Bijaya Thapa, who has been staging a hunger strike in Ilam for the past five days against KC’s demand. Thapa has been demanding the bill should be passed by a majority vote rather than under anyone’s pressure. (PR)
