Police have intervened in a rally organised in the Capital on Thursday by medical students and professionals to pressurise the government to immediately fulfill the demands put forth by Dr Govinda KC, who has been staging an indefinite hunger strike for the past 27 days.Police on Thursday afternoon intervened in a rally organised by doctors and medical students in the Capital to pile pressure on the government to address the demands of Dr Govinda KC, who has been staging fast-unto-death for the past 27 days demanding reforms in medical education sector.
The police first attempted to stop the rally at the Maharajgunj-based Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) gate, but the rally continued to march towards Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwater. When the rally reached the Police Training Academy (Talim Kendra), the police blocked the way leading to pushing and shoving from both sides.
After the police barricade, the students obstructed vehicular movement demanding the rally should be allowed to continue. A minor skirmish followed during which police arrested 25 persons participating in the rally.
The situation became tense following the arrest, and the students and doctors are not budging from their grounds.
Meanwhile, the arrested demonstrators have been detained at Exhibition Road-based Nepal Police Club.
