CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has expressed his dissatisfaction at what he called the Nepali Congress (NC)’s attempt to protract its stay in power by laying a trap in the ordinance pertaining to National Assembly election.  He accused the NC of disrespecting and refusing to accept the people’s mandate.

“The NC has indicated that it is reluctant to accept the popular mandate by raising the issue of legal hurdles,” said Chairman Oli, talking to journalists at his residence in Balkot, Bhaktapur on Monday. “It is not appropriate to wrongly use and define a respected institution.”

He remarked that the NC tabled an unconstitutional ordinance on the election of national assembly so as to suit its own interests following their electoral defeat and urged the latter to rectify it.

Saying that the country itself has enough precedents and examples of democratic practices, Oli argued that the National Assembly is not required to form a new government. “Election Commission should not move after anyone’s tweet but work according to the constitution and law,” said the UML chairman. 

Oli said he was not in a hurry to join government and that the people’s mandate has spoken about NC’s resignation.

Expressing his dissatisfaction at the government’s move to appoint head of province chief, Oli questioned: “Shall we take oath from whoever NC appoints?”
