Polling centres in the district witnessed an impressive turnout of voters, especially women, in Sunday polls. The district has one federal parliament and two provincial assembly seats.
According to Chief Election Officer, Rajendra Nepal voter turnout in the district was recorded at 69.30 percent of the total 78,515 voters. The turnout this time, however, was less compared to the local elections in June, when a record 75 percent voters cast their ballot.
There were 110 polling stations and 129 polling centres in the district.
A 101-year-old cast his vote at Ranisthan Basic School in Vyas Rural Municipality-2, said police. While the turnout of senior citizens and women—who outnumbered the males—voters was encouraging, participation of young voters was comparatively low.
Polling centres in Vyas Rural Municipality-1, which lies in the upper reaches, were shifted to the district headquarters Khalanga fearing lower voter turnout due to cold weather and chances of snowfall. The turnout was exciting at these shifted centres, election officials said , adding that they have started transferring the ballot boxes from high-mountain areas.
Ballot boxes were carried up to the nearest road and then taken to the district headquarters on vehicles for keeping them safely at the counting stations, said the election officer.
“Ballot boxes from other centres near the headquarters have already reached the counting stations,” he said, adding that the boxes from the upper regions will be collected at Dumling of Vyas and Khandeshwori of Apihimal Rural Municipality.
