Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Narayan Bahadur Karki, who was standing in for Speaker Onasari Gharti on Wednesday, directed the Parliament Secretariat to remove some words spoken by some lawmakers from Parliament’s records.
While defending a proposal of public importance of her party in the House on Wednesday, CPN-UML lawmaker Mamata Giri had used the word “monkey” while trying to explain “nature of some people”.
NC lawmaker Ram Hari Khatiwada objected to Giri’s choice of words.
“I object to the word ‘monkey’ referring to people; this goes against parliamentary conduct. I demand that the Speaker remove the word from records,” said Khatiwada responding Giri’s comments.
Karki, who was conducting the House in place of Speaker Gharti, then asked the Parliament Secretariat to take note and removed the word from the records.
Following this, Nepali Congress lawmaker Narayan Bahadur Karki who undertook the responsibility of Speaker in the absence of Speaker directed the Secretariat employees to remove the word.
Nepal Loktantrik Forum lawmaker Yogendra Chaudhary’s remarks obliquely referring to the UML also drew criticism during Wednesday’s House meeting.
Chaudhary criticised the main opposition, saying how appropriate it is on the part of a party to put forward a proposal of public importance on floods in Tarai/ Madhes, as it had previously compared the issue of Tarai with Bihar [of India].
UML lawmaker Bhim Rawal then took exception to Chaudhary’s remarks, claiming that his party has never made such remarks.
